Flash Flood Warning issued August 22 at 11:43AM EDT until August 22 at 1:15PM EDT by NWS Charleston SC
AREAS AFFECTED: Berkeley, SC; Charleston, SC; Dorchester, SC
DESCRIPTION: At 1143 AM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms with heavy rain moving across parts of the Charleston Metro Area. These storms are starting to slow down and may stall over parts of the area. As much as 2.5 inches of rain have already been observed in areas west of the Charleston International Airport with nearly 2 inches observed in about 45 minutes in North Charleston. An additional 1 to 3 inches could fall through 115 PM, resulting in flash flooding across parts of the Charleston Metro Area, including Downtown Charleston. HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing flash flooding. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Goose Creek, Hanahan, West Ashley, Downtown Charleston, I-26/I-526 Interchange, James Island, Johns Island and Daniel Island. This includes the following highways... I-26 between mile markers 208 and 221. I-526 between mile markers 11 and 29.
INSTRUCTION: Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Report flooding directly to the Charleston National Weather Service at 1-888-383-2024 or email your reports to nws.charlestonsc@noaa.gov.

Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions
which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to
their surface.
Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily
destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel
doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation
similar to situations which produce snowfall.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.
