AREAS AFFECTED: Prince of Wales Island; Ketchikan Gateway Borough; City of Hyder; Annette Island

DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Temperatures up to around 80 expected. * WHERE...Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan Gateway Borough, City of Hyder, and Annette Island. * WHEN...From noon to 7 PM AKDT Thursday. * IMPACTS...Individuals not accustomed to these unusually hot temperatures for this region may experience heat related illnesses. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Warm afternoon temperatures are expected Thursday, reaching the high 70s near the water and in areas prone to sea breeze influence with low 80s likely in areas away from the water.

INSTRUCTION: Drink plenty of fluids and check up on elderly and vulnerable relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances as vehicle interiors can reach extreme temperatures in as little as 10 minutes Take extra precautions when working in the sun. Wear sunscreen and lightweight, loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke Close curtains during the daytime to reduce sun insulation into the home and open windows at night to allow the home to cool off. Utilize fans or community buildings with air conditioning.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.

When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific to any geographic area.

Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole, skypunch, and cloud hole.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless, smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud, because it is thicker.

Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.
