Coastal Flood Warning issued August 22 at 4:34AM EDT until August 23 at 12:00AM EDT by NWS Newport/Morehead City NC

AREAS AFFECTED: Ocracoke Island

DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...For the Coastal Flood Warning, up to 2 to 3 feet of inundation above ground level possible beach front. For the Beach Hazards Statement, dangerous rip currents. * WHERE...Ocracoke Island. * WHEN...For the Coastal Flood Warning, until midnight EDT tonight. For the Beach Hazards Statement, through this evening. * IMPACTS...Significant impacts from ocean overwash are likely to continue around high tide both this morning and this evening due to continued severely compromised dune structures, high astronomical tides, and persisting powerful swell and wave run up, especially between the pony pens and the Ocracoke ferry terminal. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion.

INSTRUCTION: Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Life-threatening rip currents. If caught in a rip current, remain calm. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

A contrail is an artificial cloud, created by the passing of an aircraft.

Contrails form because water vapor in the exhaust of aircraft engines is suspended in the air under certain temperatures and humidity conditions. These contrails are called exhaust contrails.

Another type of contrail can form due to a temporary reduction in air pressure moving over the plane's surface, causing condensation. These are called aerodynamic contrails.

When you can see your breath on a cold day, it is also because of condensation. The reason contrails last longer than the condensation from your breath is because the water in contrails freezes into ice particles.
